Soul’s Gate by James L. Rubart

 Just when I think all the best novel ideas have been taken, James L. Rubart offers up a fresh serving of imagination with heaping sides of creativity and perspective. In Soul’s Gate, it’s a battle against evil like you’ve never thought possible, where fervent prayer and the Sword of The Spirit are the weapons to wield. Though the initial idea of traveling into another’s soul is not Biblical, the author stresses the point that freedom in Christ is what we are aiming at. That, as believers in Christ, we have the responsibility to lift each other up in prayer—to essentially fight our spiritual battles together while still on this earth.

 Reece Roth was given a prophecy—a prophecy that one day there would be four, the Warriors Riding. Together those four would enter in to other people’s souls, fight battles for them, and help them claim the victory of freedom in Christ Jesus. The task of training these four is Reece’s challenge, and that task is anything but simple. Brandon, Dana, Tamera, and Marcus are dealing with their own battles, their own issues, and it will take more than a few days of training at Well Spring to get this crew prepared. The enemy is not going to go down without a fight and, according to Reece, the Wolf is rising; the picture is bigger than any of them realize. Stakes are high when lives and jobs are threatened. Will they be able to pull together and come out on the other side alive?

 Soul’s Gate was very different from what I usually read. I thought I would give it a try since there seems to be so much spiritual warfare going on all around us these days. More and more I see books being released that touch on the subjects of angels, demons, and the very real battleground that we as Christians fight on every day. I enjoyed the descriptive imagery, real life characters, and fast paced action this book provided. There was never a dull moment and I often found myself having to take a break and catch my breath. Rubart’s ability to paint a picture with just the right words really drew me into the story.

I especially enjoyed reading from the point of view of Marcus, a physics professor, because of the eloquent language he used. I was glad to be reading this on my Kindle Fire because it was easy to simply tap on a word if I wanted a definition. I always appreciate being taught something new and Soul’s Gate definitely provided a much needed vocabulary refresher. Also, as a writer, I love reading a book that can teach me how to better describe people, places, and things with fresh analogies and words I otherwise would not have thought of.

Soul’s Gate is definitely a book for adults, and I might even go so far as to say for Christians who are more mature in their faith. Spiritual warfare is a very real thing (see Ephesians 6) and though this is a work of fiction, the fact remains that we have a real enemy whose greatest desire is to stop us—to bring us down. It is important to remember what the Bible says about these things while reading Soul’s Gate; if you aren’t sure, I may even suggest doing a quick study before reading this book. I would recommend Soul’s Gate if you are firmly grounded in God’s word, with knowledge of what it says about angels, demons, and spiritual warfare. I enjoyed it and look forward the the release of Book 2 in the Well Spring Series, Memory’s Door, in August 2013.
