Courting Cate by Leslie Gould          I have always enjoyed Shakespeare. In high school, one of my favorite movies was 10 Things I Hate About You, and Much Ado About Nothing with Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh always gave  me a good laugh. My daughter loved the movie Gnomeo and Juliet and I will have to admit one of my favorite movies of all time is, in fact, Shakespeare in Love. Yes, the tragic tales and love stories of Shakespeare have been done and redone. Sometimes we hem and ha and say, “Seen it, read it, give me something new.” In the case of Courting Cate, by Leslie Gould, however, this was far from my reaction.

 

 What’s the Book About?

            Courting Cate is the Amish version of The Taming of the Shrew. Cate Miller is feisty and stubborn while her younger sister, Betsy, is the sweet and flirty gal that every bachelor has his eye on. That is until Pete Treger comes to town. No matter what she does, Cate just can’t seem to scare Pete away. He is the most persistently stubborn man she has ever met and it seems he is up to no good.
          Normally, Cate wouldn’t give Pete the time of day. But with when the girls’ father says Betsy can’t court until Cate courts, the tables turn and Cate finds herself in a situation that becomes complicated sooner than you can say Lancaster County. Will Cate ever let the past go and learn to love again? What is Pete hiding? You never know what you will find when these two become a match. Are they in love or aren’t they? This book has you guessing until the very end.

 Why I liked it…

          I couldn’t put this book down, and that’s always a good sign. I became thoroughly engrossed in the lives of the characters. Leslie Gould really knows how to create characters that are unique and true. I really enjoyed going into it already knowing the story of The Taming of the Shrew. It was fun to compare what I knew of the tale, but then to also be surprised by things I didn’t expect. I also loved watching how Cate’s relationship with God changed throughout the story; how she learned to rely on Him for love and self-worth, rather than other people. That particular part of the story was something I personally related to and believe a lot of other women will relate to as well.
 Recommendation…

If you like Shakespeare, Amish fiction, and inspirational love stories, this book is for you. I am giving it five out of five stars simply because I could not put it down. Courting Cate left me smiling long after I finished the last page. I can’t wait to read the next book in the Courtships of Lancaster County Series, Adoring Addie, when it releases in May.
