Book Review ~ Firefly Island by Lisa Wingate

At first glance, Firefly Island by Lisa Wingate may seem like your traditional inspirational love story, but go beyond the first few chapters and you’re sure to find a one of a kind book that will touch your heart to its very core. Mallory Hale is completely satisfied with her role as a single woman climbing her way to the top of D.C.’s Capitol Hill. Enter the handsome Daniel Everson and his darling son Nick and everything Mallory thought she wanted goes out the window. Mallory and Daniel go from “How do you do?” to “I do” faster than you can say “Will you marry me?” when Daniel lands a job in a small town in Texas. Leaving everything she’s worked for and ever known behind, Mallory becomes a wife, a stepmother, and a country bumpkin all at once. Will she be able to face her new world and accept the quirky townsfolk of Moses Lake, or will she lose her mind the minute some creepy, crawly house guests come for dinner?  Why I liked it…

Lisa Wingate has a way of making you a part of the world she’s created. I’ve only passed through Texas on my way across the states, but the way Lisa describes Mallory’s new home in Moses Lake makes you feel like you’ve actually lived there and seen it for yourself. The characters are real and relatable. I found myself empathizing with Mallory’s situation. She faces things all wives and mothers face. Her reactions are completely realistic. I wanted to be there beside her, crying with her, making peach pies with her, and splashing in the waves with her. As a blogger and resident of “no-where’s-ville” myself, I really connected with Mallory’s need for contact with the outside world through her posts and stories in the book. I also enjoyed the element of mystery that kept me turning pages well past bedtime. This was the first novel of Lisa’s I’ve read, and after reading it I can promise you, it won’t be the last.

 Recommendation…

Firefly Island  is a story about life. If you enjoy reading fiction that pulls you in and makes you want to sit and have a cup of coffee with the characters, this story is for you. I’m putting it on my “favorites” shelf for another day when I simply need a good book to read.
