Is it just me, or did summer get hot all too quickly? It was freezing one minute and scorching the next. I never pass up a good opportunity to stay out of the heat and curl up with a good book, especially when it involves one of my all-time favorite authors!

Barefoot Summer by Denise Hunter is a story of broken roads and unexpected love. After ten years, Madison McKinley still hasn’t found peace in the wake of her twin brother’s untimely death. Believing that in, fulfilling Michael’s lifelong dream of winning the regatta she will find solace, Madison seeks out sailing lessons from a pro. Little does she know that it’s a different pro than she expected. Beckett is hiding a secret and Madison is sure it has something to do with the way her younger sister Jade left town so abruptly. Will these two opposites end up drowning each other before they’ve even begun?

What I liked…

I always enjoy seeing the story from two different viewpoints which, is Denise Hunter’s classic style. I like seeing how the two main characters misunderstand each other in the beginning and then eventually fall in love. Her writing is clear, descriptive, and speaks to the heart. I always end up being pulled into her romances, and Barefoot Summer is no different. Woven throughout a story centered around relationships is a deeper meaning relating to the ultimate relationship with our Creator. Denise is never overbearing or preachy with her message of faith, though, and allows it to fall naturally into the story line.

Recommendation…

Barefoot Summer is a reading list must. Tell your book club about it! There’s a reading guide at the end that’s perfect for personal reflection or small groups. I am giving this one five out of five stars…would Denise ever earn anything less?

Denise lives in Indiana with her husband Kevin and their three sons. In 1996, Denise began her first book, a Christian romance novel, writing while her children napped. Two years later it was published, and she’s been writing ever since.
