Plus an Amish Baking Box Giveaway!
Life is full of regrets. Things you wish you’d said. Things you wish you hadn’t. For Amish turned English gal Lydia Wyse, returning to the West Kootenai Amish community after her Mem’s death brings a flood of questions and uncertainties. Why didn’t she spend more time with Mem when she’d had the chance? Is she really happy with her life as an Englischer? Could God have more for her?
The Promise Box is the much anticipated second book in Tricia Goyer’s Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series. Entitled after the most prized possession of Lydia’s Mem, a box full of notes, letters, and thoughts all pointing to God’s promises, this book really hit close to home for me.
I know the pain of losing a parent and Tricia paints a picture of the wide spectrum of emotions regarding loss in her writing. The joy at knowing that a loved one was Saved, but also the sadness of missing them and wishing for just one more day. This book reminded me of the song “I’m trading my sorrows” by Darrell Evans:
Though sorrow may last for the night, His joy comes in the morning.
Lydia’s return, though not under the most pleasant of circumstances, just might lead her into the future God always had planned for her. Is Amish bachelor/ horse whisperer Gideon part of that plan? Will the other women in the community accept Lydia as one of their own? And what about her adoption? Will Lydia be able to find peace somewhere in the depths of Mem’s Promise Box?
What I liked…
I enjoyed seeing some familiar faces roll over into this second book set in West Kootenai, Montana. I also liked meeting some new ones and felt I could relate to Lydia with her passion for writing and longing for more time with her Mem. The slow buildup of her relationship with Gideon felt very real to me, and I had to smile at how their first meeting began as a conflict and turned into a humorous anecdote. Both Gideon and Lydia had to learn to forgive and let go so that they could move forward. They had to deal with the pain love caused in their pasts in order to be able to open up and welcome the joy new love could bring to their futures.
Recommendation…
The Promise Box is another one you can add to your summer reading list. It is tied enough to the first book, The Memory Jar, to make it an obvious addition to the series, but not so much that you would be lost if you hadn’t read the first one. Tricia Goyer touched my heart again and I’m sure if you read The Promise Box yours will be too.
