” He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Mark 16:15
We love music! My husband comes from a very musical family. All his brothers and sisters either sing, play at least one instrument, or both. I grew up doing dance and performing in musicals. Suffice it to say, we love to sing along with, dance to, listen to, and play music.
Unfortunately, so much of the music targeted at kids today is inappropriate, particularly music for girls. Songs with lyrics that encourage girls to kiss other girls and to rebel against their parents. Girls who watched Hannah Montana and looked up to Miley Cyrus now see her half naked in multiple music videos. These are the kinds of images and behaviors I do not want my daughters to see or follow.
1 Girl Nation is a new girl band, singing for the Savior and loving it! The lyrics are uplifting and clean. They encourage young girls to live for Him today in the song While We’re Young and to pray with passion in Vertical (my favorite song on their new CD). The upbeat songs are clearly written and sung for a younger audience, but I enjoy listening to them as well. We first popped in the CD while we were out and about running errands. It wasn’t long before my five-year-old was singing the lyrics. I got a kick out of watching her in my rear view mirror, rocking out to the music of 1 Girl Nation.
The other thing I appreciate about 1 Girl Nation is the way they dress. It is so hard for me as a mom to find appropriate clothing for my girls. We are a one-piece swimsuit, Bermuda shorts, no-spaghetti-straps wearing kind of family. I like that on the cover of the CD the girls are covered. There’s a way to be cute and modest at the same time and I feel like 1 Girl Nation hit that mark. Granted, they are wearing skinny pants which is in style right now, but I don’t feel they look immodest. Their tops are longer and don’t show cleavage or midriffs. They are fashionable without bearing their “bare necessities”.
1 Girl Nation is a great, Christian alternative for girls who like to listen to artists like Demi Lovato and Katy Perry. The girls are open about their relationships with Christ and I believe their boldness to share their beliefs sets a great example for young girls. Their music is modern and “hip” while extending a Biblical message. Thanks 1 Girl Nation!
More About 1 Girl Nation…
Landing in the space where One Direction meets TobyMac, 1 Girl Nation is an exciting blend of upbeat pop music, with lyrics that are totally focused on living life for God, even while you’re young. 1GN, as they’ve already been dubbed, stars Carmen, Kayli, Kelsey, Lauryn Taylor and Lindsey, five girls with a passion for telling their fans about Christ through their music. Their first single, “While We’re Young,” can be heard on radio stations across the country and their self-titled debut album is available now!

I believe the biggest challenge for our girls is at school, in the media and in society, Wrong is Right and they are ridiculed if they do not go along with it.

You’re right, LuAnn. Its one of the reasons I homeschool.

I completely agree with about modesty! It is so hard to find healthy role models for young girls.
Sara Ella says
Thanks Erin. It’s so true!

Mean girls and bullies are really hard to deal with right now.
Sara Ella says
Yes they are, Kayla 🙁

Technology and social media makes our fragile, sinful nature more of a temptation and vulnerability.
Sara Ella says
This is so true, Teri. It’s everywhere and difficult to avoid.

That they are beautiful as they are! They don’t need to transform their image to what society says or lower their standards for any boy that claims they have too in order to be cool!

Well said, Laura. This is what I want my daughters to know and believe 🙂
