Reggie Beswick has no idea she is the long lost heir to the Hessenberg throne. She’s perfectly happy restoring old cars and living out of boxes in the house that never seems to really feel like home. And then Tanner Burkhardt shows up at her garage, claiming Reggie is a princess. Tanner needs Reggie to come with him and take her rightful place on the throne if Hessenberg is to be her own nation again. If she refuses, the Kingdom of Brighton will absorb Hessenberg at the end of the entail, taking away the island’s sovereignty forever.
With humor, a budding romance, and even one’s sinister plot to overthrow Reggie as Princess, Princess Ever After by Rachel Hauck is the sweetest romance of the season. Does Reggie have what it takes to lead Hessenberg? Pick up your copy to find out!
What I loved…
I read Rachel Hauck’s Once Upon a Prince last year, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but I have to say I liked Princess Ever After even better. I love how, even when unsure of herself, Reggie carries herself with dignity and grace throughout the entire novel. She doesn’t slink back and hide, but asks questions and eagerly seeks out what she can do to help. Reggie is a very likable, relatable character. She has wit and spunk, but also just enough vulnerability and humility to make her the perfect heroine—the perfect princess.
Also of note, is how well Rachel writes a villain. I have to say I absolutely hated the main antagonist in Princess Ever After. I literally wanted to reach into the book and punch him. Everyone loves a villain, right? I won’t give away who it is (even though you find out early on) just because I want you to read Princess Ever After and find out for yourself.
And then there’s Tanner. Ah, Tanner! Excuse me while I swoon. Tanner is, in a word, adorable. He is vulnerable, funny, encouraging, and even a little insecure. Rachel writes him so well that I could hear his accent through his dialogue. With his own tainted past and traitorous feelings toward a royal (aka Reggie Beswick) Tanner is the kind of male lead every girl wants.
Finally, there was the element of mystery in Princess Ever After that drew me. I’m not talking Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys, but simply a question that arose early on in the book—one always lingering in my mind. Aside from wanting to find out if Reggie would take the throne or fall in love with Tanner, this other mystery helped keep me motivated to read until the end. This little tidbit (an no, I’m not giving it away) added that little extra something that set Princess Ever After apart from other titles in its genre.
