About Deanna’s YA Novel, Cracks in the Ice…
The mafia, Olympic Gold, a rash decision, a lifetime of regret and a second chance tell the story of Gina Mangalli in this teen Christian fiction set in Colorado Springs.
Gina Mangalli, niece of a mafia don, has dreams of Olympic gold as a figure skater. When tragedy strikes, her life spins out of control, and then a rash decision changes Gina’s life forever. The burden of guilt causes a spiral that carries her further from the life she had always dreamed for herself. Have things gone too far? Can her hopes and dreams be restored or is it too late?
Q&A With the Author…
Kathy J. asks, “ How did you come up with the title for your book? From the story line or from one of the character’s lines he may have said in the book?”
Coming up with book titles I imagine to be different for every author and perhaps different for every book. Cracks in the Ice was easy as there are references to it throughout the story. It’s a metaphor for the perils in life that tend to make us fall. It works since my protagonist is a figure skater. Not all titles are as obvious as that.
We skate deliberately over the wide dangerous cracks, where lesser skaters might fall and never recover …”
Laura P. asks, “If you could hangout with any of your characters from your novel who would it be ?”
The character I would most likely hang out with in this book would be Gina. But once she falls through the ice, so to speak, I’m not sure I would have much sympathy for her or want to be around her. When she begins to pull herself together, then yes, I’d be there cheering for her.
Torri E. asks, “I am really interested in Biblical parallels and themes. Are there any in your story?”
Cracks in the Ice has won the Seal of Approval of the Catholic Writers Guild, and was a Selah Book Award finalist. You can expect to find Biblical themes. Chastity, greed, selfishness, loss of faith, confession and remorse, forgiveness, the safety of God’s love are the ones that come to mind. You many discover others.
