Hey, Book Nerds!
It’s Wednesday and you know what that means. It’s time for Waiting on Wednesday, an event in which a bunch of us bookish weirdos post about an upcoming release we’re anxiously anticipating. Thanks to Breaking the Spine for hosting!
This week’s pick is…The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson!
The Heart of Betrayal is the sequel to The Kiss of Deception. Wait, you haven’t read The Kiss of Deception, you say? You’re telling me you have not experienced the awesomesauce that is the first volume in a saga of epic proportions? Hold on, I know what you’re going to tell me. You’re thinking to yourself, “Isn’t that going a bit overboard Sara Ella?” And my answer to you would be…
It’s my blog. I can jump ship all I want 🙂
But seriously, I LOVED The Kiss of Deception for SO many reasons. You can watch me rant all about it in my Kiss of Deception review video on YouTube.
But moving on to The Heart of Betrayal…
Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape . . . and even less of being together
Desperate to save her life, Lia’s erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komisar that she has a magical gift, and the Komisar’s interest in Lia is greater than either Kaden or Lia foresaw.
Meanwhile, the foundations of Lia’s deeply-held beliefs are crumbling beneath her. Nothing is straightforward: there’s Rafe, who lied to her, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom she always believed to be barbarians but whom she now realizes are people who have been terribly brutalized by the kingdoms of Dalbreck and Morrighan. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her very sense of self, Lia will have to make powerful choices that affect her country, her people . . . and her own destiny.
My Thoughts…
The Kiss of Deception was one big guessing game for me. I loved texting my theories to my friend Neysa, whom I have affectionately dubbed my fairy book-mother because she always recommends the best reads. My head was spinning from the time I figured out that there was a huge mystery involved. Who was the assassin? Who was the prince? Of course, in the end, my theory was correct. I knew all along who was who 🙂 My lips are sealed though. You have to read it for yourself.
I’m Team Kaden, btw. In case you were wondering.
I’ll be interested to see what Mary E. Pearson does with the plot in The Heart of Betrayal. A huge part of the enjoyment in reading The Kiss of Deception was not knowing who was who. Now that I know, I’m curious to see what kind of plot twists she’ll come up with. I think there’s more to the guys vying for Lia’s heart, and I’d like to get to know them (especially Kaden) a bit better.
The Heart of Betrayal releases July 7, 2015 from Henry Holt and Co. Pre-order a copy of The Heart of Betrayal here.

I didn’t love TKoD but I did enjoy it. I unfortunately guessed the people wrong haha. I’m on the opposite side of the fence though. I’m all for Rafe! I hope you love this one as much as the first one.

Thanks to you too, Patty! I liked Rafe but by the end I was all Kaden 🙂 It’s always fun to connect with other people and hear why they did or didn’t like a book. Thanks for sharing.
