Celaena Sardothien is the king’s Champion–yet she is far from loyal to the crown, for the man she serves is bent on evil. But working against her master in secret is no easy task. As Celaena tries to untangle the mysteries buried within the glass castle, she can trust no one, not even her supposed allies Crown Prince Dorian, Captain of the Guard Chaol, and foreign princess Nehemia. Then, an unspeakable tragedy shatters Celaena’s world. She must decide once and for all where her loyalties lie . . . and whom she will fight for. An action-packed and romantic adventure that readers “will never want to leave” (Kirkus Reviews), the next chapter in this smash hit New York Times best-selling series is sure to please Sarah Maas’s enormous and ever-growing fan-base-and to set the stage for an explosive third book. Sarah J. Maas is the New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author of the Throne of Glass series (the fourth book will release globally on September 1st, 2015) and the A Court of Thorns and Rosesseries (out May 5th, 2015). She currently resides with her husband and loyal canine companion in Pennsylvania. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Hamilton College in 2008 with a degree in Creative Writing, and a minor in Religious Studies. Sarah is represented by Tamar Rydzinski of the Laura Dail Literary Agency.
The Writing…
I have to say that the writing in this series just gets better and better. Seriously, I cannot say enough about the world that Sarah J. Maas created and continues to build. It blows my mind a little how detailed everything is, down to the accents of the characters and their family history. I continue to be amazed at how she weaves everything together. Her writing is right up there with J.K. Rowling. I think anyone who has read this series can agree we can expect great things from Miss Maas. Great things, indeed.
The Story…
Crown of Midnight is definitely my favorite in the Throne of Glass series so far. I am such a romance person and the romantic tension in this sequel is right up my alley. I have been Team Chaol from book one, and without giving any spoilers, all I will say is that Crown of Midnight was definitely satisfying to me as a swoony-Team Chaol reader. The twists in Crown of Midnight were great, and heart-wrenching at times. Chapter 29 about destroyed me, so much so that I had to put the book down for a minute and catch my breath. I even had to go back a few pages and read over that scene again because I just couldn’t accept what happened. I’m still having a hard time with it, and hope there will be another twist in the future to undo what happened in chapter 29.
The Ending…
As someone who reads like a writer, I will admit I saw the twist at the end of Crown of Midnight from a mile away, but that doesn’t make it any less awesome. As I mentioned, Sarah J. Maas’s writing is stellar. She sets up everything so nicely. This is one of those series that I will read again, just so I can look for clues I may have missed at the beginning. The end of Crown of Midnight was bittersweet and definitely left me wanting more.
