Everything by Mary DeMuth

          We constantly search for someone to depend on; someone to wholly and completely fill us. For someone to give us all the love we need and then some; someone that makes us feel secure, satisfied, and sought after. 

          In Mary DeMuth’s new book, Everything, she gets to the heart of the matter by telling readers “Often those whom I needed to be my everything ended up taking chunks of my soul with them, leaving me less than.” (Everything, pp. xvi) She gives readers practical and Biblical advice, drawing from scripture as well as her own personal experiences, showing them that the only “everything” we need is Jesus; that by giving Him everything, He will be all we need in return. 

          From the very first page I was drawn to Mary’s story. I could easily relate to her experiences and because of that, I felt a connection with her as a mother, as a wife, and even as a writer. I felt challenged and inspired to become more than a “vanilla” Christian, as Mary puts it. After reading this book I wanted to be more than just a cookie cutter follower of Christ; I wanted to give Him everything—my worries and fears, my hopes and my dreams. 

          I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking more than the average, stereotypical relationship with Christ. Mary provides reflection/discussion questions at the end of each chapter that can be answered alone or in a group setting. She ends by reminding believers what it means to be children of God and that in the end it’s “Not for your fame, but for His sake and renown.”  (Everything, pp. 198)
