The "Totally Awesome, Super-Cool" way I got my 4-year-old interested in Bible time again

Do you ever have a hard time getting your kids into God’s Word? 

I don’t just mean sitting still…I mean really into the Word to where they actually retain the information you’ve just read to them? 

This has been a challenge for me while homeschooling my kindergartener this year. The Bible curriculum we purchased just seems to be so dry and uninteresting. I even find myself falling asleep as I read it sometimes (don’t tell!). 

That changed the day we received our new Totally Awesome, Super-Cool Bible Stories as drawn by Nerdy Ned book from Thomas Nelson. The minute I took it out of the box my daughter started reaching for it. “What’s that?” she asked with excitement. “Can I see it? Is that for me?”

I didn’t even have a chance to open the book before she was taking it out of my hands and flipping through it herself. “Cool!” she said. “Is this our new Bible book?” 

That’s when it hit me: As a homeschooling mom, I have the choice to change our curriculum anytime I want! I can tweak and adjust and alter as much and as often as I choose (though I wouldn’t suggest doing this too much, or it could get confusing). The point is this: I don’t have to make my daughter sit through a curriculum that just doesn’t work for us. That’s what I love about homeschooling…I can try things out until I find what fits us. I can personalize our schedule and rework it to meet our needs.

 

I love the Nerdy Ned Bible storybook because the fun drawings get her interested and the way it is written is almost like a big kid talking to a little kid. It’s written in a way so that my 4-year-old can actually grasp and understand the concepts presented. What could be more “super-cool” than that?

The best part is, there are blank pages throughout the book that give my daughter the chance to express her own creativity. She LOVES to draw, so this book is perfect for her. Now we read a Nerdy Nedstory every morning at breakfast. It’s something we look forward to and for the first time in a while, my daughter is actually excited about Bible time! Thanks Ned!

    Your daughter is totally adorable and I love her hair!!! So glad you found something your daughter can love. My 10 year old son is not a big reader so finding the right genres and books is definitely the key. Hugs and have a great weekend! :O)
