Claire Ferguson has lost everything. On top of that, she can’t understand why her birth mother wouldn’t want her. Could she have some genetic defect that caused her to miscarry her firstborn? With nothing left to lose, Claire sets out on a search for the woman who gave her life. What she finds is something she never expected. Life doesn’t always turn out the way you plan, and for Claire this couldn’t be truer. Do fulfillment and happiness wait for Claire at the end of her quest, or will she end up emptier than when she began? Hidden in the Heart by Catherine West is a touching story that reminds readers that life isn’t always what we expect. Full of personal touches straight from the author’s own journey,Hidden in the Heart will make you laugh, cry, and even give you a different perspective on faith in God.
What I liked…
I really enjoyed this book for its raw realness. I knew going into that, though it is a work of fiction, the author drew from her own search for her birth parents. The characters are fresh and real, adding an imperfection to the story that is true to life. I can’t stand it when I encounter characters that I can’t relate to. Claire is a real woman with real problems and faults, and so are all the other people around her. Besides that, I enjoyed that the ending wasn’t a perfect “happily ever after”. The truth is, life isn’t a fairy tale. It’s hard and people are cruel. Even followers of Christ make mistakes, and Hidden in the Heart shows this truth well.
I also enjoyed getting an inside look into the world of someone who was adopted. Though my story is different from Claire’s or Catherine’s, I know very well that family doesn’t necessary mean blood. Family can be whoever loves you, raises you, or is there for you unconditionally.
“… you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, ‘Abba, Father.’” Romans 8:15b
Recommendation…
This book inspired and moved me. If you enjoy fiction that is good for the heart and soul, you will enjoy Hidden in the Heart. Catherine West writes in a way that reveals Christ’s love naturally, without being preachy or overbearing. Adopted or not, if inspirational fiction is your genre, Hidden in the Heart is the book for you.
