What if you gave your own child up without meaning to?
Even the thought is devastating to me as a mom. I can’t imagine handing one of my precious girls over to someone else. It makes me ponder on the heart wrenching feelings Abraham must have dealt with when Yahweh asked him to sacrifice Isaac.
The Offering by Angela Hunt tells the story of Amanda Lisandra, wife to a military man and mother to a musically talented little girl. All Amanda wants is a home of her own and to one day carry a son for her husband. With tuition prices for her daughter’s music school and the high cost of living, those dreams seem too far to reach. And then Amanda finds out about surrogacy and believes she may have found a way to not only afford the things she desires, but to help another couple as well. Will Amanda be able to stay detached from the child she carries even after her husband’s untimely death?
What I liked…
The message of The Offering, regarding sacrifice, made me think of the Bible in so many ways. Of Abraham and his willingness to give up Isaac when God called him to. Of the wise King Solomon and the story of the two mothers fighting over a baby. The true mother was willing to sacrifice her own happiness to keep her child safe. And of course, of Yahweh, who gave his only son Yeshua to die so we might live. What an amazing love that is! It touched me and made me oh so thankful for the Salvation that I all too often take for granted.
My critique…
This story was a difficult one with issues that are hard to swallow. I knew this going into the story, of course. My only critique is that I felt there was a lot of “telling” going on, which made the reading process slow. I felt that dialogue could have been used more often to keep me in the story.
Recommendation…
If you are looking to learn more about the emotional issues dealing with surrogacy, or to gain a modern day perspective on Biblical love and sacrifice, I recommend The Offering. If you have been a surrogate mother or dealt with similar issues, you will probably be able to relate personally to this story. It is not a light read, so if you plan add it to your reading list I would recommend praying before you do so, that God might show you what it is He wants to reveal to you through its message.
