Review and Giveaway!
“Nothing fun is going to happen today.” That’s what Punky Grace tells her Grammy when she comes down with a serious case of the grumpies.
The Blessings Jar: A Story About Being Thankful by Colleen Coble is a charming and enchanting board book, the prefect remedy for any sour day. When Punky Grace puts her complains aside and starts to see just how blessed she really is, her frown is turned upside down. From ice cream cones to walks on the lakeshore, Punky’s day is full of blessed surprises. By the end of the day her special Blessings Jar is filled with treasures and memories, reminding her of just how much God loves her.
The timing to review this book couldn’t have been more perfect for our family. Lately, I’ve felt like my five-year-old has been focusing more on the disappointments than the blessings in her life. Playtime ends, friends go home, and rain comes down on bike-ride day. This book helped me show my daughter just how blessed she really is, even when sad things happen.
We created our own Blessings Jar from an empty Mason jar we had lying around our house. Each day, we fill it with as many blessings as we can come up with and when it’s full, we empty it out and start all over again. That’s the beauty of our blessings—there are just too many for one jar! Today alone her jar has a strawberry yogurt lid, a strawberries and cream milk straw, an M&M wrapper, a Laffy Taffy wrapper, a leaf from the tree that shades our back porch, and a picture of her baby sister. There’s still plenty of room to add more of the day’s blessings, though. I love watching her search for more blessings and things to be thankful for. It has already become a fun little game that I hope we can play every day!
Another thing I loved about The Blessings Jar was that Colleen Coble based the main character of this book on her own granddaughter, which is clearly reflected in the book’s illustrations. I truly hope there are more Punky Grace stories planned for the future—it would make an excellent series.

I try to remind them of how blessed we are and how God has provided for our family. This sounds like a great book and I can’t wait to share this with my kids and others.

I always encourage my child to say “Thank you”, even for the small things! I tell them, “Thank you” so that they hear it and they hear me Thank others! We send Thank You cards.
Sara Ella says
Thank you cards are so important 🙂 I think a lot of people don’t send them anymore, which is sad. I think they’re a nice way to show you appreciate someone.
Joyce and Norm says
Every night before bed, they write down their favorite part of their day and what they are thankful for. #1000gifts 😉

I always remind them of how blessed we are and how they should appreciate everything and also to share with others. Sometimes they have funny prayers like Thank You God for the yucky peas I have to eat for dinner etc. We also do the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes and we pray for that child and I tell them what country the box was sent to etc.
