Review and Giveaway!
A Big Year for Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher, is a delightful story for girls ages 8 to 12 featuring Lily Lapp, an Amish girl who loves to read and write and go on all sorts of adventures.
Lily’s tenth year is a big one, chock full of surprises, and not all of them welcome ones. From bats in her attic bedroom to too many run-ins with that awful boy, Aaron Yoder, Lily’s year brings big changes in many ways. She’s growing up and along with that comes new responsibilities, not to mention lessons in honesty, friendship, and what it means to turn ten in the Amish Community. Will Lily accept the changes in her life as blessings, or will she wish for everything to stay the way it is?
What I liked…
A Big Year for Lily reminded me of what it’s like for any girl, Amish or English, to grow up. As exciting as grown up clothes and new found independence can be, getting older can also be a little scary. This is the third book in The Adventures of Lily Lapp series, but it was also my first time meeting Lily. After getting to know her and the Lapp family, I now want to go back and collect the entire series, not only for me, but for my daughters as well.
My five-year-old loved the cover because it has “little girls on it” and asked me to read it aloud to her. The chapters are brief, which is perfect for her attention span, and the sketches of Lily’s adventures throughout the book add just the right touch. More than anything, I enjoyed seeing Lily grow throughout the book and learn from the choices she made. The outcomes were not always what she wanted, but in the end she found that friends and family are the best things of all. Kids, and even grown-ups, can be mean, but when you have those you love by your side it helps you get through those tough situations.
Recommendation…
I recommend A Big Year for Lily to girls of all ages, not just those who are 8-12. My five-year-old enjoyed it and so did I. It makes a great family read-aloud or gift for a girl who loves a good chapter book. Collect all four books if you really want to get to know Lily. She is full of life and mischief. You and your girls will fall in love with her. Lily is just one of those unforgettable characters who you want to read more about, even after the final page is turned.
