Ssmccalltephanie McCall is a full-time freelancer and novelist. She wrote Promise of a Future out of a desire to advocate for persons with disabilities and bring attention to the everyday lives of those whose disabilities are high-functioning and include giftedness. She lives in North Carolina with her family, where she enjoys reading, music, theater, and learning languages. Her most frequent writing companion is Clarice, the calico cat who adopted her in 2013.

In fact, she’s increasingly terrified her disability will soon make her life little more than a prison sentence. Kate’s aunt, Elinor McCune, has distanced herself from an abusive childhood. Married to a wonderful man and pregnant, she is haunted by the specter of her past. When Kate’s life derails, Elinor jumps in to help, and the two women begin a journey to make peace with the past and present. With dark forces threatening inside and out, they must find the road that leads to freedom and the promise of a future.

 I always liked the relationship between Merry Hanson and Jon Klein from Beverly Lewis’ Summer Hill Secrets series because it’s based on word games.

Lily, age 14, asks “If you could become a character in your favorite book, who would you be and why”?
 I’d want to be Elinor Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility because she’s intelligent, levelheaded, and able to deal graciously with all kinds of frustrating situations.

Medea, age 13, asks “Which Disney princess are you most like”?

 I am definitely most like Belle.

Danielle, age 12, asks “Do you like ebooks or real books better?”

 I like “real” books better. I want to have something to hold in my hand and pages to turn.

Katie, age 12, asks “What is your biggest pet peeve?”

My biggest pet peeve is rudeness and disrespect.

Angelica, age 14, asks, “When did you start reading for fun? Do you remember the first book you read that made you love reading?”

I’ve been reading for fun since about second grade. I started loving to read when I read the American Girl collection.

Reagan, age 15, asks, ‘Which faction would you choose in Divergent?”

 I would choose the Erudite faction.

Sofi, age 15, asks, “Which fictional character would you marry?”

 Ah, there are so many good ones… I think I’d choose Henry Tilney of Northanger Abbey.

Kylie, age 17, asks, “How young were you when you started writing? How long does it take to write a book?”

 I was about six when I started typing poems and tiny stories. It takes about nine months to write a book, get it edited, and polish it.

Sam, age 15, asks, “Do you ever judge a book by its cover?”

No, not really, but I do judge by what the back-cover copy says. If I like what I read there, then I buy the book.
